Legendary for their strength, stamina, and habit of jumping when hooked, tarpon are among the world’s most prized game fish. They can be 4-8 feet long and weigh 60-280 pounds. Their silvery, shiny blue-gray or green backs are covered with large scales and the tail is deeply forked. Tarpon frequently rise to the surface of the water and take gulps of air which gives them a short burst of energy. They can breathe through their swim bladder. Fossil records date them back to 100 million years ago. The Atlantic Tarpon is found throughout the Gulf of Mexico, on the coast of the western Atlantic Ocean from Brazil to Virginia, the west coast of Panama and Costa Rica, on the west coast of Africa and sometimes in the Canadian Atlantic waters.
